About Genus/Species Classification
The major part of the taxonomic information
is taken from the
taxonomy database maintained by NCBI.
This means that
the genius/species classification may differ
from the information given in the PDB SOURCE record.
This also means that the taxonomic information given here
differs from the genus/species list of the SWISS-PROT/PDB
cross references.
For all entries not included in the NCBI database,
for example model and also some other structures,
first the SOURCE record of the PDB file and if this
fails the OS record of SWISS-PROT are used.
The naming scheme was unified according
to the NCBI scientific name, but the
search option allows to search for
common names and alternative scientific names.
If structures contain
sequences from different species
they are included in the lists for all of
these species. Any sequences be
they synthetic or not, for which no
species information can be extracted,
are classified as
not assigned.
When comparing the figures given in this
genus/species classification to the data
provided by PDBsum note that PDBsum includes
superseded entries.
